Misinformation and disinformation can cause misconceptions and affects the participation of voters in elections. LWV was here to help back in September where they educated members on what it is, how to avoid it, and how to end it.
Back in September, Arend Peter Castelein spoke to our communities about the impact of alternative methods on voting and elections. Through busting false claims and informing the public he is ensuring a better democracy through education.
Last July we hosted an event addressing the community’s concerns on affordable housing and what action could be made. Many were concerned about the State-wide limited housing supply to support the current and projected population. State law requires each city to have a plan to achieve increased housing. We discussed issues revolving around R-1 Zoning, the construction of new large apartments and condos, Accessory Dwelling Units, traffic, and infrastructure. The community had the chance to voice their concerns and the discussion was summarized and forwarded to city & state officials.
For Earth Day, we hosted an event with speakers covering climate solutions and ways to get involved. With climate change tremendously impacting community health it's now more important than ever that everyone does their share in the fight for environmental justice.
Back in March 2024, we organized a panel of subject matter experts to discuss racism in the South Bay and what can be/is being done about it. At this event we not only talked about issues in the community but how to turn ideas into solutions to create a better environment for every member of the community.
At our 62nd annual breakfast we had Zarina Khairzada, a journalist for Spectrum News 1, speak about what goes into developing a news report, followed by our LWVTA election and direction to the board.
Dr Grace Peng is the Natural Resources chair for the LWV of Los Angeles County. She previously worked as a weather and climate analyst for The Aerospace Corporation. At this event she shared what a cleaner, brighter future can look like through better transportation.
For Constitution Day we hosted an event where audience members had the opportunity to explore their perspectives and gain a better understanding of the perspectives of others in a guided discussion through the topics of secure elections and voter rights. It was a successful way to encourage effective dialogue between fellow members around difficult topics that are important to democracy.
In 2022, we hosted a Tri-League brunch featuring speaker Viet Hoang. He serves as the Deputy City Manager for Torrance.and has been the staff liaison to the Social Services Commission since 2016. The Commission’s jurisdiction includes people experiencing homelessness, Veterans Affairs, adults with developmental disabilities and youth with special needs. This event shared the issues of homelessness in Torrance and how to work together as a community to solve them.
Since the 1960s, League of Women Voters have been at the forefront of efforts to protect air, land, and water resources. Through a free online film screening and online discussion, we presented the inspiring case of YOUTH v GOV. The story of Juliana v. The United States of America constitutional lawsuit and the 21 American youth, ages 14 to 25, who are taking on a case against the government for violating their constitutional rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The impacts of oil extraction are disproportionately impacting the health of black and brown communities.
The League of Women Voters of Torrance Area hosts Jack Messerlain and Liz Pino for an information session on SB9 and its impacts.
League of Women Voters of the Torrance Area's Natural Resource Director, Gloria Gutierrez, hosts California Native Plant Society's Tony Baker in discussing the role that native plant spaces can play in mitigating climate change, supporting biodiversity and water conservation.
